Pyramiden, The Soviet Ghost Town

On the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, at 79° North which is up the Polar Circle and approximately 1000 kilometers from the North Pole, lies a soviet ghost town called Pyramiden. The name comes from the pyramid shape of the mountain upon which the town has been built. This town was developed from scratch and used by Russian between 1931 and 1998 to exploit the coal mine nearby. Due to the very remote aspect of the town, it was functioning in total autonomy and had to grow and breed everything to feed the thousand of people living there. In 1998, the exploitation of the mine stopped and everybody left.
